Introducing the Australian Music Touring Network

The Australian Music Touring Network is a new web-based platform mapping Australia’s original live music venues. It aims to feature every music venue across the country, creating a highly visual, easy to navigate platform for artists and tour managers to access information and helpful suggestions to enable successful touring.

It’s completely free to use for all types of users. At this stage of development, we are looking to engage with music venues to sign up for their unique, editable profile.

What do we mean by a “music venue”? The Australian Music Touring Network defines a music venue as a physical establishment that presents original contemporary music on a regular basis. Regular can mean daily, weekly, monthly, or at any other regular interval.

In addition to identifying with this definition, when you sign up as a venue you will be asked to agree to the following statements:

  • This venue regularly presents live original contemporary music (new music of any genre)
  • This venue believes in and supports fair pay for artists, and has a business model that allows for fair payment for performances
  • This venue is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for artists and audiences
  • This venue has a website, Facebook page or other social media presence that can be linked to from the AMTN website
  • This venue has a way to be contacted for booking shows (e.g. phone number, email or contact link) that can be listed on the AMTN website
  • This venue promotes and markets its live music performances (unless a dry hire venue, such as a community hall or other multi-purpose venue)
  • I am happy for a representative from the AMTN to contact me from time to time to keep this venue listing information up to date

How to register

Registering your music venue for the Australian Music Touring Network will take you approximately 10-15 minutes. You will need to provide:

  • Contact information, including the best person or channel for an artist to use to get in touch with you
  • Technical specifications, including physical stage size and capacity
  • Photos of your venue, ideally of the performance space(s)
  • Accessibility information
  • Optional additional information around preferred music genres for presentation, regular days/times for performances, local intel, and anything else you wish to share
  • Name of the Traditional Country your venue is located on. For help finding this, we suggest using this online resource from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies

About the AMTN

The Australian Music Touring Network is a project of the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN). AMIN brings together the 8 state and territory peak bodies for contemporary music in a strong, organised, and effective alliance. AMIN is a locally informed national voice, empowered by our on-the-ground connection to each state and territory to communicate and advocate for deeply understood priorities from all parts of our nation’s contemporary music industry. We work across borders, actively listening and conversing, to ensure that our national industry is equitable, supported, and celebrated. We understand that music is innately local before it is national and global, and we operate with that understanding at our core. Artist-centred and industry-connected, we are a national voice that speaks from an authentically community-informed position.

The Australian Music Touring Network has been assisted by the Australian Government through Music Australia and Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

Key definitions

Music venue: a physical establishment that presents original contemporary music on a regular basis.

Contemporary music: new, original music in any genre.

Fair pay: the Australian Music Industry Network advocates for fair pay for musicians as integral to any venue’s business model. We support Musicians Australia’s call for a minimum of $250 per musician while recognising this minimum is not always achievable.

Regular presentation (of original live music): presentation at any reasonably regular interval, such as daily/weekly/monthly. If you only program music once or twice a year and are not seeking to increase the number of presentations, this platform is probably not for you.
